What does your sleep score actually measure?
Your watch says you slept badly, but you feel fine. Or you feel wrecked and the app hands you an 88. If you wear a sleep tracker, you’ve probably had a morning where the sleep score and your body told two different stories. That mismatch isn’t a malfunction. It’s built into how these scores work. A sleep score is one number trying to summarize something your wearable can only estimate from the outside. Once you know what goes into the number, and how accurate it really is, it becomes more useful and a lot less stressful.
What goes into a sleep score
The short version: sensors, then a formula, and the formula is different for every brand.
Your wearable can’t see your sleeping brain. A sleep lab measures sleep directly with electrodes on your scalp. A watch or ring on your wrist or finger measures things that correlate with sleep: movement, heart rate, heart rate variability, and on some devices skin temperature and blood oxygen. An algorithm turns those signals into estimates of when you fell asleep, how long you slept, how restless you were, and how much time you spent in light, deep, and REM sleep.
The sleep score is a weighted blend of those estimates. Duration usually counts most, with sleep stages, restlessness, consistency, and heart rate making up the rest. Every company weighs the ingredients differently and keeps the recipe proprietary. That’s why the same night can earn a 74 on one device and an 85 on another, and why there’s no medical definition of a good sleep score. The number is a brand’s opinion of your night, not a clinical grade.
How accurate is a sleep score?
Accuracy splits cleanly into two questions, and trackers do well on only one of them.
The first question is whether you were asleep at all. Here trackers are genuinely good. In a 2024 study comparing three popular wearables against polysomnography, the lab standard for measuring sleep, every device detected sleep versus wake with 95 percent or better sensitivity. Total sleep time from a modern tracker is a reasonable estimate.
The second question is which stage of sleep you were in, and here the picture gets shaky. In that same study, accuracy for discriminating between sleep stages ranged from roughly 50 to 86 percent depending on the device and the stage. A larger validation study of 11 consumer sleep trackers, run across 75 adults with overnight lab recordings, found stage-classification performance ranging from poor to moderate, with wide gaps between devices and particular trouble around deep sleep and brief awakenings.
So when your app says you got 42 minutes of deep sleep instead of your usual 90, that’s the least reliable part of the report. The sleep score built on top of it inherits the uncertainty.
When the score and your body disagree
Believe your body more often than you believe the number, especially when you feel fine.
Sleep researchers have documented what happens when people trust the tracker over everything else. A 2017 report in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine coined the term orthosomnia for patients preoccupied with perfecting their sleep data. The patients in the report stretched their time in bed to push their numbers up, which is the opposite of what insomnia treatment prescribes, and it made their sleep worse. One patient kept asking why her Fitbit said she slept poorly even after a lab study showed above-average deep sleep for her age.
The lesson isn’t that trackers are useless. It’s that the score is an estimate, and your daytime experience is evidence too. Sleep clinicians pay attention to energy, mood, and concentration, because how you function is part of how sleep is assessed. A rough score after a night you’d call solid is a data-entry disagreement, not a health event.
How to use a sleep score without obsessing
Used lightly, the number can still earn its place on your wrist. Four habits keep it useful:
- Watch the weekly trend, not the nightly number. One low reading means little. A two-week slide in sleep time is worth acting on. The same logic applies to sleep debt, which builds and repays slowly.
- Anchor to hours, not points. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends seven or more hours a night for adults on a regular basis. That target is evidence-based; your score’s cutoffs aren’t.
- Use it to test one change at a time. Earlier caffeine cutoff, steadier bedtime, cooler room. The trend line will tell you more than any single score.
- Take a break if it’s stressing you. If you’re lying in bed to farm points, or the first thing you feel each morning is dread about the number, go two weeks without looking. Your sleep will not miss the audience.
And the number has limits worth respecting.
